SEO Content Brief Template

Give a writer a specific answer to pursue, supported by real evidence. This editable Word template captures the target URL, keyword, reader intent, distinct angle, and topic-based length. Its second page maps H1/H2/H3 sections to the answer and source each needs. The third page records internal links, three dated search-result observations, voice guidance, and review ownership. Bracketed fields are prompts, not prewritten article claims.

What you get

  • Keyword, audience, intent, and angle fields
  • H1/H2/H3 outline and required-elements tables
  • Five internal-link slots and three search-result observations
  • Writer instructions and final review prompts

Who it's for: SEO strategists, content managers, and editors briefing writers for blog content.

What this template is

The SEO Content Brief Template is a Word document you complete before anyone starts drafting. It turns a topic into a clear assignment: who the page is for, which search it answers, what evidence it needs and how it will be reviewed. Its opening instruction sets the standard: replace bracketed prompts with verified project details.

What is inside, section by section

Assignment and search intent is a field table covering the working title, owner and writer, target URL, primary keyword, secondary keywords, audience and intent, what the reader must be able to do after reading, the target length based on a review of the results page, and the due date and reviewer. It also asks for an answer-first opening in two or three plain sentences and a distinct angle: which firsthand detail, example, process or source makes this useful beyond competing pages.

Outline and required elements gives you an H1, H2 and H3 skeleton built around reader questions, each with the answer, example or evidence it must contain. A required-elements table lists verified facts with source and date, a visual, table or example, FAQ candidates (real follow-up questions only), the call to action, alt-text needs and an avoid-or-do-not-claim list for unsupported claims and legally sensitive wording.

Links, search review and hand-off adds a table for five internal links with suggested anchor, placement and the reason each helps the reader, a search-result review table with the observed URL, what it covers well and the missing angle, a voice and editorial instructions box, and a review checklist naming who verifies accuracy, links, brand fit and the final search preview.

How to use it

The person commissioning the piece fills in the brief, ideally after reading the current results for the target market and device and recording the observation date, since results change. The writer then improves the answer-first opening rather than starting from nothing. Keep the finished brief with the draft so the reviewer can check the piece against what was agreed.

Who it is for

Content managers briefing freelancers, in-house writers who want a consistent starting point, and agencies running a steady publishing calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Should the writer copy competitor outlines?
No. The template tells you to draft headings around the actual reader questions and not to copy a competitor outline verbatim.
Do I have to fill in every field?
Fill in what changes the draft. Fields such as the avoid-or-do-not-claim list and the evidence table exist to prevent unsupported claims, so they are worth completing.
Can it be used for pages that are not blog posts?
Yes. The same assignment, outline and review structure works for service pages, guides and landing pages.
