Keyword Mapping Spreadsheet

Paste observed keyword data into Raw Keywords, classify query intent, and decide which existing or planned URL should own each cluster. The workbook has five tabs: Raw Keywords, Intent Sorting, Page Assignment, Priority Matrix, and Competitor Gap. The matrix adds three editable 1–5 planning scores for demand, ease, and relevance; it is not a ranking forecast. Gap rows keep the observed URL and date beside each finding so the team can revisit a changing search result. All source-data rows start empty.

What you get

  • Five working tabs from research to page assignment
  • Intent buckets and URL mapping columns
  • Editable demand, ease, and relevance score with a sum formula
  • Dated competitor-gap observation log

Who it's for: SEO strategists and content teams building or refreshing a keyword strategy.

What this workbook is

The Keyword Mapping Spreadsheet is an Excel workbook that takes you from a raw keyword export to a decision on which page should target which cluster. It is built for working through research methodically, and all source-data rows start empty so nothing in it is presented as real data.

What is inside, tab by tab

Raw Keywords is where you paste exports, one row per query, with columns for keyword, monthly volume, tool-reported difficulty, country, source and export date, and notes. Keeping the source and date beside each row lets anyone verify the numbers later.

Intent Sorting asks you to classify each query as informational, navigational, commercial or transactional, and to record a SERP observation, the user's real question, a related cluster and notes.

Page Assignment maps each keyword or cluster to one primary URL, marks it as existing or planned and as primary or supporting, and holds title and H1 ideas and the next action. Its instruction is to review overlap before creating a new page.

Priority Matrix scores demand, ease and relevance from 1 to 5. The sheet sums the three into a score out of 15, and only when all three are entered. It describes the total as a planning aid, not a ranking forecast.

Competitor Gap records dated observations: the observed URL, the date, their angle, your current coverage, the potential gap and your decision. The note on the tab warns against assuming that a competitor's keyword is right for your audience.

How to use it

Fill the tabs in order. Paste the export, sort by intent, decide which URL owns each cluster, score only the clusters you could realistically build, and use the gap tab to record what you saw in the results on a specific date. Because search results change, the date column matters. Treat the score as a way to start a conversation about priorities, not as a prediction.

Who it is for

SEO strategists and content teams building or refreshing a keyword plan, and site owners who want to avoid publishing two pages that compete for the same query.

Frequently asked questions

Does the workbook include keyword data?
No. All source-data rows start empty. You paste exports from the tools you already use.
What does the score out of 15 mean?
It is the sum of your three 1 to 5 ratings for demand, ease and relevance. It helps you order work and does not forecast rankings.
How is it different from a content calendar?
It decides which page targets which query. Scheduling the writing is a separate step, handled in the Content Calendar Template.
