Topic Cluster & Pillar Page Outline Template
Plan the cluster before commissioning articles. The editable document has a cluster overview, a pillar-page brief, six article-map slots, an internal-link map, a dated content-gap review, and a publishing work plan. Each supporting page needs a distinct reader question and a useful two-way link to the pillar. The final page records dependencies, owner, date, measurement plan, and quality checks. Use the gap section to decide what to build, improve, or skip based on your own audience.
What you get
- Cluster rationale and pillar-page outline
- Six article-map slots with query intent and status
- Internal-link map and overlap check
- Gap analysis and sequenced publishing plan
Who it's for: Content strategists and SEO leads planning a topic cluster for competitive keywords.
What this template is
The Topic Cluster and Pillar Page Outline is a Word document for planning one coherent topic cluster: a pillar page plus the supporting articles around it. It is designed to stop teams from publishing a pile of overlapping posts by making them plan the scope, the overlap and the links first.
What is inside, in six parts
1. Cluster overview captures the core topic, audience and market, the reader's main job, business relevance, the existing topic owner, research date and pillar status, plus a strategic rationale and a scope boundary that says which adjacent topics need their own cluster.
2. Pillar page plan holds the working title and URL, primary keyword, secondary phrases and entities, search intent, the core answer in two sentences, evidence or original examples and a target length that is reasoned and not a default. A section table runs from the intro through foundations, process, decision points, common mistakes and the next step.
3. Cluster article map has one row per distinct reader question with the target query and intent, status and how it links to the pillar, followed by an overlap check for planned articles that risk answering the same query.
4. Internal link map sketches the hub and spoke, with the pillar-to-spoke anchor, the spoke-to-pillar anchor and an extra related link for each spoke, plus a list of existing pages to refresh, redirect or link instead of recreating.
5. Gap analysis records a dated review of relevant pages and a decision to build, improve or skip, with a prompt for your unique advantage.
6. Publishing and measurement sets the order and dependencies, an owner and date for each step, the measures to review and a final QA list covering canonicals, internal links, unique intent, citation accuracy and mobile readability.
How to use it
Fill in parts 1 and 2 before you write a word, then use part 3 to test whether each article deserves its own URL. Publishing everything on one day is optional; link each page as it goes live. The template says not to assign a target without a baseline, so record indexing, relevant queries and organic entrances before you start.
Who it is for
Content strategists, in-house SEO teams and agencies planning a content hub for a service, product category or subject area.

Frequently asked questions
- How many supporting articles should a cluster have?
- The template shows six rows as a starting layout, but it tells you to add one row per distinct reader question and to use a new URL only when the intent warrants its own page.
- Can I use it for an existing site?
- Yes. The internal link map and gap analysis include space for existing pages to refresh, redirect or link rather than recreate.
- Does it set a word count for the pillar page?
- No. It asks for a target length with a reason, because length should follow the topic and the results page, not a default.
